Something old, something new
Something borrowed, something blue
And a silver sixpence in her shoe.
This old English phrase originated from the Victorian Era and it is believed that if a bride keeps each of the above mentioned items with her on her wedding day it will bring her good luck and a happy marriage. "Something Old" symbolises the bride's family and past while "Something New" brings hope and optimism for a new and happy married life. "Something Borrowed" is an item from a family member or friend whose good luck in marriage is said to carry over to the bride and "Something Blue" symbolises love, purity and fidelity as in the old Roman traditions. It is an old Scottish belief that it is good luck for a groom to put a silver coin under his foot and this is where the "Sixpence in her Shoe" originates from- the sixpence represents wealth and financial security.
